There’s no shortage of evil or suffering in this world. America is full of hunger, disease, hate, violence, and deep injustice. Many of you feel some of this in your own life. More than 600,000 Black Americans, mostly Black women, have lost jobs due to Trump’s anti-Black Project 2025 policies. Some of you have even lost loved ones, as I did. I lost a dear friend of over 40 years only days ago.
Paul the Apostle knew pain firsthand too, yet he told the church at Thessaloniki, “Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:18. If you’re thinking Paul didn’t go through what you’re facing, I get it. Everyone carries a different burden. But Paul wasn’t speaking from theory. He spoke from scars. And here are three reasons his instruction still makes sense today.
First, God already promised you victory over every temptation and trial.
In 1 Corinthians 10:13, Paul gives three truths. Your struggles aren’t new. God will not allow them to crush you. And God provides an escape route. That means you never face hardship alone or without divine help. That alone gives you a reason to thank God, because with Him your battles are winnable.
Second, God never abandons His people financially or otherwise. Hebrews 13:5 says:
“Be ye free from the love of money; content with such things as ye have: for himself hath said, I will in no wise fail thee, neither will I in any wise forsake thee.”
Hebrews 13:5 says:
You possess something greater than money: you possess the presence of Yahweh, the Sovereign Creator. He promises to meet your needs and even your desires that align with His will. 1 John 5:14–15. So, when bills are stacked up or your job vanishes, thank Him anyway because He remains your source. Ask Him. Trust Him. Then move your feet.
Third, God makes His followers more than conquerors
God built His people with power and authority to overcome every challenge. That’s part of Kingdom citizenship. When you seek His Kingdom by living righteous and doing justice, Jesus promised to increase our peace. Matthew 6:33 and Romans 14:17. And peace is the Hebrew word shalom, which means peace, safety, security, prosperity, wholeness and strength for today and tomorrow.
Conclusion
So, give God thanks in every circumstance. Not because life feels easy, but because He is present, He is faithful, and He already equipped you to overcome what you’re facing. You have everything you need to get through this season and step into the life He promised.
